This page is intended to provide Andalusia residents with information about what you can do to keep hazardous materials out of our landfills and water supplies. Our governments (local, regional, and national) have passed numerous laws that restrict where and how certain items are to be disposed. For example, as of February 2006, California law prohibits you from throwing your used batteries and fluorescent light bulbs in your trash – instead, you should be storing them in a safe place until you take them to an approved disposal area.

In addition, there is information here on how to swap or donate working items.

Christmas Tree Disposal: You may take your used Christmas trees (compostable or non-compostable) to the Republic Services site at 42600 Boyce Road in Fremont. There will be a $5 charge for each tree.

GARBAGE

Bulky Item Pick-up

Andalusia HOA falls under Republic Services’ Single Family & Townhomes category since we have individual cart service. This means that each resident can have one bulky item pickup per year without charge. There can be no more than two items picked up. The homeowner can call Republic Services at 510-657-3500 to arrange for a bulky item pickup or call regarding a missed cart. You will need to provide the Commercial account number (3-0916-0026120) for Andalusia HOA since individual addresses are not in the Republic Services system.

You can also arrange for bulky item pick-up by clicking on this link:

ORGANICS RECYCLING

Since May 2015, Andalusia residents have been able to recycle more by putting food scraps and other organic materials in the green composting containers.

In Fremont, single-family homes have been composting plant debris and food scraps for a number of years. Efforts to compost food scraps and plant debris have become a priority for Fremont, as an Alameda County law now makes it mandatory to manage our organic waste materials.

There are very good environmental benefits that result from composting organic waste. Composting not only keeps our landfills from filling up faster than necessary, but there is also a significant reduction in the greenhouse gases produced from landfills that contribute to global climate change. The composted material can then be reused in landscaping and farming which in turn will help conserve water and reduce the need for synthetic fertilizer.

What Items Should Go Into the Green Containers?

The definition of “food scraps” and “food-soiled paper items” are items such as these:

Food Scraps
  • fruits and vegetables, including pits and rinds
  • bread, pasta, rice and other grains
  • dairy products and egg shells
  • meat, skins, fats and bones
  • coffee grounds and tea leaves
Food-soiled Paper
  • pizza boxes
  • takeout containers
  • wooden chopsticks
  • paper plates and cups
  • paper napkins and towels
  • paper coffee filters and tea bags
  • paper bags or newspaper used to contain or wrap food scraps
Obviously, you will need to adjust your recycling habits as it relates to the paper items. But please do not just toss them into your regular recycling container.

If you have questions or comments, you may contact the City’s Environmental Services Division at (510) 494-4570 or send them an email.
